Athletics Eligibility

Athletics Eligibility

The sports program at Sonoma Valley High School is a very exciting part of high school life. Students are given the chance to participate in a wide range of organized sports at varsity, junior varsity, and frosh levels. Sporting events are big sources of school spirit, which involve players, staff members, the community, band members, spirit leaders, and the ever-present Dragon fans!

To be eligible to play a sport, a student must have an unweighted 2.0 grade point average during the grading period immediately preceding the sport in which the student wishes to participate. A student that has 2 F's, if eligible, must apply for a probationary contract in order to continue participating.

Students who are declared ineligible may apply for a probationary contract period once in their four years of high school. Students participating in sports may apply for a probationary contract only if they meet North Coast Section (C.I.F.) eligibility requirements: passed or passing a minimum of 20-semester units and on track for graduation.  The length of the probationary period is six weeks (or until the first progress report). During this period, a student may participate in an extra-curricular activity; at the end of the period, a student must have a 2.0 grade point average in all classes or he/she is ineligible for the remainder of the grading period. Student-athletes who become academically ineligible may be allowed to participate in practice with their respective teams, however, this is a coach's decision. They may not dress for athletic events. The Athletic Director is responsible for receiving and approving/disapproving all eligibility appeals, and determining eligibility status at the end of the probationary period.

Students declared ineligible for participation are ineligible for an entire grading period (they may not compete). Students are declared ineligible on the 2nd Monday following the grade due date (7 day grace period for notification and corrections). Eligibility for the next grading period will be determined following the provisions of these regulations.
